Redemption: A Study In The Book of Exodus

Overview

The story of the Exodus is the most significant, historical and theological event in the entire Old Testament. It’s not just a story about Moses, the deliverer who comes to save a nation of people. The book of Exodus and the Exodus story is a mirror image of our story. It offers us the greatest picture of redemption in the Bible, short of the Person and work of Jesus. In the Exodus, God calls Israel out of slavery, and that is immensely good news for them; but it’s good news for us today, to those who are in bondage to sin. God calls them out of Egypt and brings them out of all the things that are enslaving them. And at the end of the day, God calls us out of all the things that are enslaving us as well.

Mark: A Journey With Jesus

Overview

Mark’s biography of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is the shortest, but is thought to be the earliest of the four gospel accounts. The book has two clear themes that mirror how it is commonly divided: who Jesus is; and why he came. In that, Mark emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and he tells us that Jesus came to suffer and die for sins on the cross, highlighting the great work of atonement accomplished there. Mostly drawing his content from his friend and ministry companion the Apostle Peter (who walked with Jesus), we can confidently trust that Mark’s testimony is faithful and true and that it will lead us on a journey with Jesus as well.

Why The Church Matters

Overview

We're celebrating 5 years as a church! In this series we pause to thank Jesus for His faithfulness to build His church! We reflect on our journey so far; but also paint a picture of who we are as a church and, by God’s grace, what we hope the next 5 years will bring.

Man of Sorrows

Overview

We don’t know much detail about the three decades of Jesus’ life, but the fascinating feature of the story of the passion is that from Good Friday to his crucifixion, the Gospel writers give us great detail; almost a slow motions sequence frame by frame. The reason is important: the crucifixion is the story on which the world’s redemption hangs. Jesus’ last days highlights the atonement; his suffering for human sin on the cross. Isaiah rightly called him a man of sorrows.

Prayer for Everyday Life

Overview

There’s a lot that the Bible has to say about prayer. But there’s really only two passages of Scripture where Jesus tells us how to pray. That’s in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:5-13) and Luke 11:1-4. What does Jesus do in the Lord’s Prayer? More than giving us the exact words to pray, he gives us a pattern; a model of prayer. But along with giving us a pattern of prayer, Jesus also teaches us about the Fatherhood of God, the kingdom of God, the will of God, forgiveness, temptation, and more. In this, Jesus models prayer for everyday life.

Reasons To Rejoice

Overview

Paul writes this letter to friends in Philippi as he sits in a Roman prison, yet one of the words that he most frequently uses is joy. Paul has reason for joy because of his hope in God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul thanks the church at Philippi for their partnership in the gospel, and with that, exhorts his friends with some of the New Testament’s richest teaching about Jesus and the gospel.

Jacob: Lessons of Faith and Grace

Overview

Jacob was a schemer from the very beginning. He wrestled in the womb. Jacob even wrestled God, and his entire life was marked by manipulation, striving, planning, plotting, and working for something to satisfy his soul, and secure his blessing. Eventually he found it, but not in any of the places he first looked.

Jacob’s life is much like ours. Many of our stories are filled with a relentless pursuit of satisfaction and blessing. We all look for meaning, purpose, and worth, scheming to get what we want, not realizing that in the gospel we find what we long for. In this series we explore lessons of faith and grace in the life of Jacob.

Dealing With Doubt

Overview

Everybody has doubts, especially when it comes to Christianity. Some doubt the Bible’s claims to be inspired and authoritative. Some look at the world and how it works, and just can’t understand why if there is a God, he would allow pain and suffering, or how anyone can ignore scientific evidence of how the world was made. Many have trouble accepting what the Bible says about its central figure, Jesus, and all that he claims to have done and said, especially the resurrection.

We all have doubts, and the tension between different views of the Bible and the values of Christianity fuels more skepticism and doubt, only made worse by the very real questions of life, that seem to go unanswered. But what is if it’s okay to doubt? This series encourages us to deal with our doubts.

James: Live What You Believe

Overview

The Letter by James offers us an important view of the Christian faith. While he barely mentions Jesus at all, James goes straight to practical issues, namely how to live in light of the gospel. James assumes his readers know and believe the gospel; they just aren’t applying it to how they live. In this, he calls Christians to a tested, mature faith; faith that is so genuine that it is evident to the world. James exhorts us to live what we believe.

Rhythms

Overview

The purpose of spiritual disciplines are to put us in a place where God can change us from the inside out. One author described the disciplines as "any activity I can do by direct effort that will help me do what I cannot do by direct effort.” To exact the change we need, spiritual disciplines have to be incorporated into the rhythm of our lives. The heart of spiritual disciplines is to hear from God, and learn to sit as Jesus’ feet.

Get Wisdom

Overview

Proverbs 4:5 says, "Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth." Why do we need Proverbs? Because proverbial living is inevitable. Proverbs are a deep reflection on the way the world works. Proverbs are also designed to shape character. Proverbs is a gospel book; Jesus is the source of our lives and he is also our wisdom (1 Cor. 1:30-31). It it, we can find hope for our failures and wisdom for those of us who are idiots.

Easter 2016

Overview

What did God accomplish in the resurrection of Jesus Christ? There are a lot of misconceptions. While Christians point to the historical and biblical evidence that proves the resurrection really happened, the task of Easter is not to persuade people that Jesus rose from the dead 2000 years ago. The task of Easter is to explain how Jesus being God is good news.

Titus

Overview

What is a healthy church? The assumption a lot of times is that only churches that are big, popular and have far reaching influence represent what it means to be healthy. Here’s the truth: The Bible dictates to us what a healthy church looks like. That’s why Paul writes a letter to Titus: to establish a healthy church on the Island of Crete. In this, we learn that healthy churches have healthy leaders; healthy churches have healthy doctrine and center themselves on the radical nature of God’s grace; healthy churches have healthy social relationships and community; and healthy churches embrace a healthy mission, all rooted in the gospel.

Overview

John stated his theme more clearly than any of the other gospel writers. He wrote so that his readers might “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,” so that they may have life in His name (John 20:31). For readers of John’s gospel, the question he asks is simple, though significant: Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?

Christmas Stories

Overview

Everybody loves a good story. Undoubtedly, some of our favorite memories of Christmas are the stories told when family and friends get together. The true story of Christmas is a family story as well. It is a story that has been told for 2000 years. It is an epic story; a prophetic story. It is a story that is a new chapter in the grander story of God’s plan of redemption to free people from sin. It is the story of Jesus. This Advent series looks at the story of Jesus through the eyes of his closest family members — Joseph, Mary, and God.

This season is known as Advent, which means “coming” or “arrival.” Transit Church will observe the four traditional weekly themes of Advent: hope, love, joy, and peace. Join us as we learn from the prophecies of Isaiah about how anticipation brings a clearer understanding of Jesus, the baby born in Bethlehem…God with us.

Overview

Jesus death and resurrection is the central fact of human history. The cross and the empty tomb are the twin events that form the foundation of the church. Apart from these two events, there is absolutely no church. Jesus resurrection is totally unique in that Jesus became human. He lived a perfect life, suffered in our place, and he literally died for his people and then was raised to life and now rules and reigns over his church forever.

The Bible is most of all an incredible story. It’s a story about God. It's a story from God's viewpoint. It's a story of God's love, His sacrifice and His promise. It's a story of God's gospel. The hero is God Himself, coming in the form of a man named Jesus...and the story starts where all good stories start. Right at the very beginning. Story tells how the Bible holds together; explains its big themes; and shows how the Bible points us to Jesus.
